Thesis: I wish Gatorade came in this flavor.

A Story: Vespidae (ves-puh-day): Latin name of the family of wasp trying to kill me.

The Cliff Notes: Translucent garnet red, this wine floats Christmas spice, smoke and green tea over high-tone cherry. In the mouth, elegant tannins keep just-ripe cherry and apricot awash on a neverending sea of mouthwatering acidity.

The Vintage: What started with a late and cool spring, ended with the latest harvest on record. We kept yields exceedingly low to attain ripeness on a very modest yield with low alcohols.

The Building of: Six- to eight-barrel-lot wild yeast fermentations in stainless steel, 100% barrel aged for 19 months — 29% new, 19% one year, 19% two year, 32% three year or older barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in March of 2013.

Ageability: We absolutely recommend that you consider decanting to get it some air within its first three years. This wine should easily climb in complexity towards, and likely beyond, ten years.

Vineyards: Shea Vineyard (14 years) brought ripe dark fruit, Temperance Hill (32 years) old-vine complexity, Black Walnut (9 years) sweet earth and Gemini Vineyard (20 years) ripe fruit driven red by its prominent acidity.
