A constant drawing you in

The Cliff Notes: The translucent ruby red color of this wine belies its much deeper aroma. Sweet graham, red plum and oiled leather commingle on the nose along with scents of brown spice, cola and musk. The impression on the palate falls more to red: ripe cranberry, sweet raspberry, and a slight savory Asian grill (umami). The intensity is subtle and persistent, with acid well matching a fairly plush palate that keeps putting your lips back on the glass.

The Name: Oh for the love of ...Troublemakers.

A Story: The story of 2016 is really the story of an immense amount of “brilliant sunshine” in the Willamette Valley, an unending string of sunny days of which I cannot recall in my lifetime. It started warm, trended very warm early and ended cooler, such that the yields were less, color intense, and the wines play a little more demure than the warm vintages on either side of it.

Fermentation: Small-lot wild yeast fermentations in open-top stainless steel tanks. Limited pre-ferment maceration, followed by minimal, but targeted temperature and punch-down intervention.

Elevage: 100% barrel aged for 17 months in French oak: 11% new, 20% one year, 20% two year, 49% older. Racked and bottled, unfined and unfiltered in February of 2018.

Ageability: Drink now to seven years and think about getting it some air in the first three.

Vineyards: A blend of three vineyards, Temperance Hill (37 years), our St. Dolores Estate (9 years) and Louis Vineyard (12 years). — Jim Prosser, owner/winemaker
